Frequently Asked Questions about the Program:
What is the Field Experience Program?
NYC iSchool is a small selective, progressive New York City public high school located in the SoHo section of Manhattan. The NYC iSchool bridges the gap between academics, career development and the real world through the Field Experience Program. This program allows students to serve their communities, explore career areas, and gain firsthand experience in their areas of interest while serving as interns at various New York City businesses and organizations.
How does the Field Experience Program work?
NYC iSchool seniors are placed at various internship sites after the completion of a Field Experience Seminar/Orientation, designed to prepare them to be successful interns. The iSchool also provides ongoing internship support for both the intern and the host site.
What will this cost my organization? What will I be required to do?
There is NO COST to your business/organization. The role of the host site supervisor is to provide a safe and supportive learning environment, to sign off on the intern's weekly hour log, to inform the school of any issues or problems, and to provide a final evaluation of the intern at the completion of the internship.
What does my business/organization gain?
There are many benefits to hosting a student intern:
· Our interns are highly skilled, creative, and hard-working.
· Interns are eager and committed to learning first-hand from professionals in the field.
· The opportunity to help mold and positively influence the lives of the youth in our community.
When does the program begin? How often will the students be with us?
The Field Experience Program will begin in mid-to late-November and conclude in early June. Students should be expected every Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and every Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. except on days where indicated by the school or by you.
How are students evaluated? Will my organization be evaluated?
The NYC iSchool is constantly evaluating the Field Experience Program. Site supervisors will be asked to evaluate students on various competencies throughout the course of the year. Students will also evaluate their sites to ensure the overall effectiveness of the partnership.
Can I interview my intern(s) prior to committing to the program?
Yes, while interviewing interns is not required, if you are looking for a student with specific skills, we allow organizations to interview our interns.
What if my intern doesn't work out?
The iSchool provides preparation for all interns prior to their start in the field, however there may be occasions when a student is not the right fit for a particular organization. We will discuss your concerns, possibly attempt to intervene or correct the situation, or switch a student's internship site when necessary.

The iSchool is currently seeking businesses and organizations to partner with our students on projects that will provide valuable learning experiences for our students and valuable service to your organization. By partnering with iSchool students on projects for your organization, you will help:
Demonstrate how academics are connected to the work of the “real world”
Expose our students to varied career fields and jobs and inspire a new generation of workers to explore and pursue the career that you love
Instill in our students valuable 21st century skills
Show teenagers that they are capable of doing real work that matters to organizations and their communities
Rethink your resource pool! Our students can become your consultants. Teenagers are creative, innovative thinkers, tech-savvy, and compassionate. As members of a group with huge purchasing power, they understand what your clients and customers want and need. A class or classes of students provides significant brain and man-power. Here are some of the projects our students have already completed for various organizations:
Gathering teen perspectives from around the globe to inform the adolescent education exhibits at the National September 11th Memorial and Museum
Developing a franchise expansion plan for Two Boots pizza
Designing Green Roof proposals for public schools
Creating digital activism campaigns, walking tour podcasts, and policy briefs
How it works:
Envision a short-term task or project (usually 8 weeks) - large or small - that your organization needs completed.
Our teachers will meet with you to discuss your vision and needs and will work with you to determine a deadline and outline the deliverable our students will produce.
Your organization will present the "challenge" to the students, provide "expert" guidance and support as needed, and then participate in the presentation and evaluation of the students' final product.
To become a client or expert for one of our challenge-based courses, please contact Principal Cara Tair-Fanor (CTait2@schools.nyc.gov).
