Students need to keep track of their grades but Jupitergrades might not be the right way to do it.
Jupitergrades is currently used at the NYC iSchool for students to always have access to their current grades.
Many students like the online site, but others think it is not utilized well by teachers. Freshman Nathan John stated, “It is not good, teachers do not update it enough so it says I am missing an assignment when I really handed it in.”
Some students think that Jupitergrades is a great way to keep up on your grades and have no surprises on your final report card. Another freshman, Nick Elish explained, “I like it, it is an easy and reliable way to get my grades before my report card comes.”
Many students believe Jupitergrades is fine and there is not a better solution to keep students up to date on their grades. There are other websites like Jupitergrades that are online grade books for example, Teacherease. Teacherease is also an online gradebook that many schools use to keep their students on top of their grades. Teacherease is similar to Jupitergrades but has some minor differences including the layout of the site.
Students’ opinions on Jupitergrades vary with the teachers they have and how much their teachers update it. Some teachers only update it once a week, but others update it as much as everyday. Freshman at iSchool Katie Ronn stated, “Jupitergrades is pretty good but it should be updated about every two days instead of once a week.”
Many students also do not check their Jupitergrades so they do not know if they have work to make up or if they got a bad grade on an assignment.
Numerous students believe that if teachers updated Jupitergrades frequently and students checked everyday, it would be a more successful way of teachers letting students know their progress.
Transitioning to high school can be tough, and many freshmen are not used to checking things like Jupitergrades or even their email daily. Many students are not comfortable with it yet, and are trying to get used to checking all the necessary websites regularly.
Weekly, emails are sent home with current grades on Jupitergrades or a note reminding students and parents to check Jupitergrades frequently.
Just as students are urged to check Jupitergrades daily, they want teachers to update it whenever grades come in so students can stay organized and on top of their work.
Jupitergrades can become extremely stressful for students because with parents checking it so much, sometimes more frequently than the student, parents question why their child has a bad grade. Also, with so many grades to enter, it is not hard for teachers to make a mistake on a grade. Parents can think their child is doing very poorly, when it might be just a mistake.
